Chinese Pottery Jar

Chinese Warring States Period (475-221BC) - Qin Grey Pottery Jar (221-206 BC), with incised marks.

  • It is made from a relatively high-fired dense grey pottery. It has a burnished surface decorated with just three sets of incised twin bands surrounding the shoulder. In places the surface has "sagged" a little either before or during firing. There is a firing crack to the outer lower body and to the edge of the mouth is a defect where the pottery is misshapen; this area comprises all original pottery so the "defect" obviously occurred during manufacture and prior to firing.
  • Unusually, to the shoulder there are various geometric patterns, clearly scratched onto the surface after firing, performed during antiquity.
  • This is a large jar with a height of 37 cm (14.5 inches) and a diameter of 34 cm (13.25 inches). It is in fine condition and has no restoration or repair.
