Chinese Pottery Jar
Chinese Warring States Period (475-221BC) - Qin Grey Pottery Jar (221-206 BC), with incised marks.
It is made from a relatively high-fired dense grey pottery. It has a burnished surface decorated with just three sets of incised twin bands surrounding the shoulder. In places the surface has "sagged" a little either before or during firing. There is a firing crack to the outer lower body and to the edge of the mouth is a defect where the pottery is misshapen; this area comprises all original pottery so the "defect" obviously occurred during manufacture and prior to firing.
Unusually, to the shoulder there are various geometric patterns, clearly scratched onto the surface after firing, performed during antiquity.
This is a large jar with a height of 37 cm (14.5 inches) and a diameter of 34 cm (13.25 inches). It is in fine condition and has no restoration or repair.
